Why should I calibrate my monitor?

Most monitors come out of the box with non-optimal settings selected by the manufacturer to offer higher brightness and look more appealing. Unfortunately these settings prevent good color rendering.

The human visual system is adaptive and adjusts to the illuminant (light source), it is nearly impossible to simply look at a monitor and tell if the color is biased. Also, while the eyes adapt, they can't adjust to different color balances at the same time. Depending on the ambient light, the monitor can look "good" or "bad". This is why a display must be calibrated and profiled individually in its working location.
